I flip through the photo album labeled Fall, Spring 2001-2002, and watch as the smiles are slowly washed out of our faces — flat-lined mouths that evidence the trace of bonemash and uncurl. Some find it harder than others to bring themselves to smile. My grandfather’s face is particularly haunting — the knowledge is there. It’s on my grandmother’s as well – and my father’s and my aunt’s. It does not appear to be on mine. I don’t yet know what is coming.
I flip and flip. See a happy face on one cousin, a sad face on two others. See myself delighted by the children running — distracting. There are pictures of my mother’s birthday — and I realize that by now, my uncle is dead. Sitting on the couch, flipping through the pages, I begin to start to cry — the crying however cannot sustain itself and fails (an impotence of tears).
I get to the end, and begin to flip backwards, and catching myself doing it, smile one of those same thin smiles.

doomed to die – a glorious hairy vulva hangs in the Musee D’Orsay
in Paris, called sthe Origin Du Monde — may the soft embrace
of the mother welcome you home — a million million dying soldiers
choked by smoke and lying in mud call out for livind and dead
mothers — the arbitrary asynchronicity of existence reduces to
a single deathbed, one neck, and the moment I write in
is identical to the moment I die in — it will be easy, surely —
like the exhalation of a breath — like the wish of a dried-out
dandelion, catching on the wind. Harder for those who remain —
us — me — the survivor’s testimony — oh — oh — oh
Well. I will not be so easily tamed.

Paintings not shorthand skyscapers. Visual – balance of elements – taken to another place. He’s in the immaterial world. The test of purity. We want to be shaped, we want to be connected to others — Oh, this Modern World — where are we???

In the 60s, money wins. We can reflect ourseslves back to our ourselves. Consumerism. We love it, but ehh — confident and unhinged — Pop Art. We don’t believe anything — why shouldn’t we bring it into art? Synthesize — no reliable truth — surface and not debth — ironic eyebrow at old highmindednes — us looking at our own disillusion — we’re disillusioned with AE’s disillusion. Why does it have to be moral to be important? Why stare earnestly into a dematerialized void to find values? You can look at Elvis, and a wealth of stuff will well up. What is the status of Elvis? Compared to Saints? Is he in it because he’s important or not important? Why are there two of them? Uncertain about the status of everything.
How shall we live? High and Low — are they opposites anymore? Aren’t they in the throwaway? Can’t we read anything? Why did the popists do it? To be opposite. Popsters — we can’t tell what the emotion is. Accept challenge, but don’t see why the only way to be challenging is to worry about why man is base, what history teaches us, and to always be damning society. Cruising society in new mood of elegant discsombulobated fragmented forgetfulness — you might not like it, but that’s us, babe. Paint my numbers. Schematic. Ads. Existence becomes more and more like pop art. Relaxing.

Watto — life is sordid, corrupt, but art is only enchanting if it is connected to hard realities and strangeness. Films and photos are mass enchantment. Art still wants to show reality vivid and intensified. Seems to be about hopelessness and the hell that society has become. We can’t believe in anything anymore. Everything we thought made us what we are are empty — nostalgia — art is no longer heroic — democratic, everyone can have a go — higher feelings are not fake — they’re wat we’re taking into account — production values and contrast — arrangement so that the eye is delighted — that is not despair — trying to make an image strike a chord — it’s trying to be an artist — when you become aware of it, you become aware of something profound in itself — maybe not heroic, but they are real —
Greatesty irony — jokes instead of heaviness – questions instead of certainty — new freedoms mean there is no high and low anymore — we are the low — we think its weird, but we are weird — our models for authority have changed — god can be anything — voice in the street — new dreams — new freedoms – enter the future

In the beginning, one must assume that there was nothing — no matter, no energy, no time — Tohu v’Bohu. Formless. And Void. But there was an Egg. An Egg of Infinite (Nearly) Potential. And the Egg’s name was named Ananke. And then — let us suppose — there was something — Genesis describes it as the spirit of God, moving across the Deep — modern science might designate it as random repeating pseudoquantum fluctuations — some sort of bubbling — a frothiness — and in the strange nonlight of the Egg, within its structure, where all things are possible and time was without meaning, the most unlikely of events become possible through the calculating potential of an Unlimited and Unlimiting Present.
And thus the world was born — with Egg and the Spirit mingling and tearing itself apart — like a wound in God’s side. One imagines that some part of this diety is deeply disturbed by this wound, and wishes nothing more than for it to close. Is there another part that keeps the wound open? Like mighty hands pushing aside the waters of a fiercely flowing river to uncover a bed of dry land? This river — raging on either side of this fragile temperate voidspace is the Storm.
